The six WIDA levels

WIDA describes English language development in listening, speaking, reading and writing. The level names help teachers describe the language a student can use across school subjects.

At Level 4, a student can use academic language for a range of classroom tasks while still benefiting from support with dense or technical texts. In an asynchronous course that might mean reading the week’s material and explaining an idea in the discussion forum.

How does WIDA relate to CEFR?

The CEFR A1–C2 levels and WIDA were developed for different purposes. A CEFR label alone does not establish the WIDA level a school expects. Confirm which result or assessment your program uses.

English in a typical class

  • Read primary sources and instructions for the week.
  • Write a response to a discussion prompt and reply to classmates’ ideas.
  • Complete a research task, project, essay or problem set.
  • Read the teacher’s feedback and ask for clarification.

How can I prepare?

  1. Write a 150–200 word response to something you have read and support your point with evidence.
  2. Read nonfiction as well as fiction, including science and news articles.
  3. Practice replying to another person’s idea in two or three sentences.
  4. Set a weekly deadline for a short piece of work to practice the rhythm of an asynchronous course.

Frequently asked questions

What English level should I have?

Requirements vary by program. The VHS Learning Academy partner dual diploma expects at least WIDA Level 4. Confirm the accepted assessment during application.

Is WIDA one test?

WIDA is an English language development framework with related assessments. Ask which evidence a particular school accepts.

Can I apply without an English preparation year?

A preparation year alone does not determine readiness. The school considers whether the student can understand academic reading and contribute to written discussions in English.
